How to be a good learner #1

Prize Tuition • Jul 02, 2017

What makes a good learner? Good subject knowledge? A well-behaved child?

A good learner is one who has a number of characteristics which are more varied from the traditional ideas of a 'good pupil'. A good learners is one who:

  • Takes risks
  • Is open to new ideas
  • Views making mistakes as an opportunity to learn
  • Has a good memory
  • Looks for and finds patterns in new information
  • Notices things
  • Is good at listening
  • Is able to focus on a task
  • Studies little and often over long periods of time
  • Listens to feedback and responds to it positively
  • Is able to critically evaluate their own performance
  • Loves learning

The good news is that these are all skills that can be learned. Parents can help their children to learn and improve these skills and many of these skills can be learned through playful ,every day activities. In fact, there will be many instances where you will recognise games and activities from your own childhood that encouraged these very skills.

In this series of blog postings, I will be describing why these skills are important and suggesting activities for you/your child to improve them.

At Prize Tuition, we help children to become good learners. Of course, this means good subject knowledge but we also work on all those skills that will help your child learn no matter the subject.
